This is the first blog I've come across about a MK3 Astra. I've got the exact same, MK3 95 blue Astra but 1.4 C14NZ. Bought it for £400 6 months ago, was running fine, changed coolant temp sensor after some crazy stalls and misfires, then changed all brakes, tyres, front struts and now.... well now I'm facing head gasket failure! Exhaust is hanging off, steam coming out of it, coolant being used as fuel. It's still running, just a matter of when and if it dies, only done 52k miles in it's life and I've put 6k on that... Oh I forgot to mention it's got a massive dent in the front from previous owners so I know exactly what you mean about it being a 'Mutant' car... haha I still love this car though!
